What do Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Randy Orton, and Oprah Winfrey have in common? They have all leveraged their unique gifts or X factors. The NCAA wanted to level the playing field for shorter basketball players. In particular, they wanted to take away the height advantage for 7’2 former UCLA Center, Lew Alcindor (later known as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar). As a result, the league banned dunks from 1967 to 1976. In response, Abdul-Jabbar developed the skyhook as his signature move. He used this move to become an unstoppable force on the basketball court. He went on to become one of the all–time scoring leaders in the NBA (Uitti, 2023).As he mentioned in the Impausive Podcast, professional wrestler Randy Orton injured his shoulder early in his career. He wanted to wrestle without having to physically pick his opponents up. He got inspired by the finishing moves of two other wrestlers: the Ace Crusher from Johnny Ace and the Diamond Cutter from Diamond Dallas Page. Orton developed his own version of those finishers, the RKO (Orton, 2023). His athletic leaps and quick headlocks enable him to do the maneuver “out of nowhere”. The RKO propelled Randy to fame, enabling him to main event three Wrestlemanias and become a WWE Grand Slam Champion.Oprah Winfrey openly gives her guests platonic physical touches as well as her full attention. She validates the feelings of her guests and matches their body language and tonality. As a result, she makes her guests feel comfortable with opening up and becoming vulnerable (Houpert, 2018).An X factor is a special talent or quality about a person. People with X factors stand out.
