The Myth of Io was brought down to us in oral traditions until first written down by the poet Hesiod in the early 8th Century BC. It traverses the depths of the feminine journey and its many voices. We can never know what the ancients thought of the myths and their connection to the gods and goddesses, but we can approach this body of work from the perspective of the many dimensions of the nature of the collective feminine psyche, regardless of gender.The writing, related to the mode of active imagination, moves in an amusing even ruminating manner more than an expository one as it seeks to capture the many voices which emerge as an enigmatic plurality in the life of the psyche. The task is not to offer a critique but to tune mind, heart and senses to the multi-leveled trek, long and rhythmic in its movement, which fills the life of Io. Of all human undertakings the interior journey into which one is cast headlong in ardor and anguish is least able to be summarized.This book is meant to be read out loud, ideally with multiple readers and pauses for reflection. It requires a slowing down. Smith intends the words to be pondered and to inspire multiple perspectives and inquiries. Smith’s seminar participants learned to let the dialogues seep in and to contemplate them from various points of view. They can feel both ancient and current, sometimes simultaneously. Pondering Io’s long wandering journey – whether alone or with others -- offering various interpretations can offer insight into the human experience.A synopsis of the myth is given prior to entering the 32 dialogues written by the philosopher and mythologist Betty M. Smith. The dialogues amplify the many themes and encounters throughout Io’s journey. In between the need for wandering and dwelling we move with Io through many transitions from alienation, victimization and loneliness to finding her support and a sense of home within.
